The history of therianthrope gatherings in nature (rather than in front of a computer)
began in 1994, and the first known "Howl" was organized
by Smash Greywolf.
The goal of the "Howls" was to meet and socialize, discuss
shared interests, and simply relax among like-minded individuals.
This community traces the history of its "Howls" back to 2003.
The purpose of these gatherings was never to drink vodka in the woods,
cuddle with wolves and/or bears,
"initiate" newcomers into anything,
or conduct any kind of occult rituals.
Due to the growing prevalence of the term, gatherings organized
by other communities—or those with different objectives—have no connection
to therianthrope gatherings.
The tendency to label such "outdoor drinking parties" or
"initiations" as "Howls" is merely a banal
appropriation of the name.
